How to Bypass Deep Freeze Password Protection with Meltdown

Deep Freeze is a software that protects computers from unauthorized changes by freezing their configuration and restoring it on every reboot. However, this software has a serious security flaw that allows anyone to bypass the password protection and generate one-time passwords (OTP) to access the Deep Freeze settings. This flaw has been exploited by a tool called Meltdown, which can easily crack Deep Freeze passwords and disable the protection.

Meltdown is a tool that was first published in 2013 by a reverse engineer who goes by the name of Life In Hex. He discovered that Deep Freeze had a poorly designed communication protocol between its user interface (UI) and its driver, which exposed the password information in plain text. He also found out that Deep Freeze used a simple XOR encryption to encrypt the data, which could be easily reversed. He created Meltdown to demonstrate how easy it was to obtain the password and disable Deep Freeze.

In 2014, Faronics, the company behind Deep Freeze, released a new version (v8.10) that fixed the vulnerability in Deep Freeze Standard, but not in Deep Freeze Enterprise. They also added a licensing mechanism that required each workstation to be activated, but this introduced a new local privilege escalation vulnerability. Life In Hex updated Meltdown to work with the new version and exploit the new vulnerability.

In 2016, Faronics released another version (v8.31) that attempted to stop Meltdown from generating OTP for Deep Freeze Enterprise, but they failed again. They added another layer of XOR encryption, but they also added a new feature to the driver that allowed Meltdown to obtain the information necessary for OTP generation. Life In Hex updated Meltdown again to bypass the new encryption and use the new feature.

As of 2021, Meltdown still works with the latest version of Deep Freeze (v8.63) and can crack any password and disable any protection. Faronics has not issued any security bulletins or acknowledgements about this issue, nor have they fixed it properly. Meltdown is available for download from various sources on the internet, such as Life In Hex's blog or Google Drive.

To use Meltdown, one needs to run it as an administrator on a computer that has Deep Freeze installed. Then, one can choose between two methods: open a new process or inject into an existing process. The first method is recommended as it is more stable and less likely to cause errors. The second method is faster but more risky as it may crash the system or trigger antivirus alerts. After choosing the method, one can press Start and wait for Meltdown to find the password and generate an OTP. Then, one can use the OTP to access the Deep Freeze settings and disable or uninstall it.

Meltdown is a powerful tool that exposes the weakness of Deep Freeze's security design and implementation. It shows that Deep Freeze is not as reliable and secure as it claims to be, and that anyone can bypass its password protection with ease. Users of Deep Freeze should be aware of this risk and take precautions to protect their computers from unauthorized access.
